An epic but brutal coming of age tale

I cried. More than once. For Betty. And all those close to her. Betty might end up to be my favorite read of 2020.

It tells the story of an interracial family: one Cherokee dad, one white mom and eight children born between the late 30s and late 50s. It is a life of devastating trauma, sorrow and grief. But don’t let that scare you away, because there is so much warmth, beauty and joy in the human connection and interaction.

Decades of the family’s life is documented through the eyes of Betty, the youngest girl. The family gets hit hard with issues as poverty, violence, abuse, human loss and mental instability. Life is difficult for Betty. While coping with all this hardship she is coming of age constantly facing racism and sexism reminding her of the role she is supposed to play in society. But she is also fierce and resilient and so she embraces the woman she wants to be, encouraged by the loving, caring and loyal family bonds, especially with her dad. Ten stars for the dad. He empowers Betty through magical Cherokee tales. It is this loving bond that is the glue that keeps Betty together and that gave me the courage to keep on reading.

This is no light, uplifting book. It is the kind of book that makes you appreciate the best in your life by showing you the worst of human kind.

Ik huilde. Meerdere keren. Voor Betty. En al degenen die dicht bij haar staan. Betty wordt misschien wel mijn favoriete boek van 2020.

Het vertelt het verhaal van een interraciaal gezin: een Cherokee-vader, een blanke moeder en acht kinderen geboren tussen eind jaren '30 en eind jaren '50. Het is een leven vol verwoestend trauma, leed en verdriet. Maar laat dat je niet afschrikken, want er is zoveel warmte, schoonheid en vreugde in de menselijke verbinding en interactie.

Tientallen jaren van het gezinsleven worden gedocumenteerd door de ogen van Betty, het jongste meisje. Het gezin wordt hard getroffen door problemen als armoede, geweld, misbruik, menselijk verlies en mentale instabiliteit. Het leven is moeilijk voor Betty. Terwijl ze met al deze ontberingen omgaat, wordt ze volwassen en wordt ze voortdurend geconfronteerd met racisme en seksisme en herinnert ze haar aan de rol die ze in de samenleving zou moeten spelen. Maar ze is ook fel en veerkrachtig en daarom omhelst ze de vrouw die ze wil zijn, aangemoedigd door de liefdevolle, zorgzame en loyale familiebanden, vooral door haar vader met zijn magische Cherokee-verhalen. Het is deze liefdevolle band die de lijm is die Betty bij elkaar houdt en die me de moed gaf om te blijven lezen.

Dit is geen licht, opbouwend boek. Het is het soort boek dat je het beste in je leven laat waarderen door je het slechtste van de mensheid te laten zien.
