Toen ik Normal People voor het eerst las in 2018 vond ik het een van de meest miserabele boeken die ik ooit las. Elke minuut was pure ellende. Een punt waarvan ik jarenlang voet bij stuk heb gehouden en een aantal vijanden mee heb gemaakt (niet echt, maar toch).

Na nu in 2024 opnieuw te lezen kan ik Sally Rooney's literaire genialiteit eindelijk waarderen (ik laat de citaten voor zichzelf spreken). Het is nog steeds een hopeloos verhaal. Soms zijn een boek en jij niet voor elkaar in de wieg gelegd, maar dat hoeft je begrip en herkenning van schoonheid niet in de weg te staan. Ik ben er van overtuigd dat binnen tien, twintig, vijftig... jaar dit als een klassieker beschouwd gaat worden. (Als het dat al niet is)

All these years they've been like two little plants sharing the same plot of soil, growing around one another, contorting to make room, taking certain unlikely positions. But in the end she has done something for him, she's made a new life possible, and she can always feel good about that.
