Tip 10: 'The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy and Other Stories.' (Tim Burton)
Tim Burton zijn cinema is welbekend. Edward Scissorhands, Corpse Bride, Nightmare before Christmas, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Batman, Ed Wood, Mars Attack,... In 2018 streek de expositie 'The World of Burton' neer in C-Mine Genk en toonde een nog completer beeld van deze artistieke duizendpoot. Vooral zijn tekeningen en vluchtige schetsen op allerhande soorten papier maakte indruk. En daar vonden we ook dit kleinood, 'The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy and Other Stories'. Een cast van gruwelijke, sympathieke kinderen passeren de revue. Stick boy and Match girl, Robot boy, Staring girl, Mummy boy, Junk girl, Melonhead, Anchor baby,... Totaal misverstane kids, outcasts, die een straaltje liefde, genegenheid, geborgenheid zoeken in hun gruwelijke omgeving, in een wereld die hun tracht te vermorzelen. Tim Burton schetst en tekent hen niet alleen op zijn typische manier, hij eert en vergezelt ze ook elk met een passend pakkend stukje poëzie.
Roy, the Toxic Boy
To those of us who knew him
- his friends - we called him Roy.
To others he was known
as that horrible Toxic Boy.
He loved ammonia and asbestos,
and lots of cigarette smoke.
What he breathed in for air
would make most people choke!
His very favorite toy
was a can of aerosol spray;
he'd sit quietly and shake it,
and spray it all the day.
He'd stand inside of the garage
in the early-morning frost,
waiting for the car to start
and fill him with exhaust.
The one and only time
I ever saw Toxic Boy cry
was when some sodium chloride
got in his eye.
One day for fresh air
they put him in the garden.
His face went deathly pale
and his body began to harden.
The final gasp of his short life
was sickly with dispair.
Whoever thought that you could die
from breathing outdoor air?
As Roy's soul left his body,
we all said a silent prayer.
It drifted up to heaven
and left a hole in the ozone layer.

Een ander filmregisseur wiens schrijfsels in onze WC kan rondslingeren is Pedro Almodovar. Deze Spaanse filmer schreef met 'Patty Diphusa' de schandalige memoires van een, door hem verzonnen, internationale pornoster, en andere ontboezemingen waarin hij van-de-pot-gerukte adviezen geeft voor toekomstige cineasten. Hilarische snacks die meer dan amuseren in dat achterkamertje, genaamd de plee, toilet.
